I have noticed this over and over in the corporate world: The best people are on the bottom: The people who are genuine and honest and work for the right reasons. The farther up the ladder you go, the more the employees close their eyes to obsurdities and injustices within the company. By the time you get to manager you have an individual who swears the emporer is clothed.
Same thing when I worked in the school systems.
So sad. . .

I've worked hard to be able to participate in society (and be part of society,) and I do not see any honor in trying to stay uneducated and on the bottom of society.
I do believe there are very few ethical leaders producing genuine goods and services. If they can take your last dollar before they kill you, deliver nothing, and get away with it, they will.
Retail is consumption. Maybe my 15 minutes of contact with retail will cause me to consume less. I'm leaning in that direction. Maybe big retail organizations are evil. Maybe I'll build my next cabinet rather than buy junk from a HD.

Actually, the best educated people in Home Depot are on the bottom. One associate I work with is a former college lit. professor. Another is a part time hydrologist. Many are young people working their way through college, e.g. pre-med. I think the more educated you are the less likely you are to rise to the top of corporations. The people I see rise to the top are generally slimy, simple folk with little to no moral backbone. My store manager started as a cart boy in the lot, and as far as I can see, his vision hasn't risen much since. Same for the ASM's.

that often in all walks of life, the unqualified seem to get promoted. Not just in retail, but in the police, military, private business.
Consider that a person who starts out in the lower runs of the operation and does a decent, even good job, that person will likely advance to the next position.
If he/she does well in that position then they will most likely advance again. This cycle keeps going until that person reaches a level at which he/she can not perform the job decently. Probably they will stay at that level and we will all take pot shots at him/her for being incompetent (because they are incompetent in THAT job).
This is simply the way the cycle goes. You keep rewarding and promoting a person until they reach their limit and become incompetent or marginally competent in that last job.
In an ideal world that person would be sent back to his most immediate prior job, but this is the real world and it seldom happens. They will stay in their last job and those under them will continue to complain about what a crappy job they are doing.
It can happen to anyone, that former professor who is doing so good in the trenches could get promoted and find that he can't handle the paperwork or can't manage people under him. He goes from being a great guy in the store to a damn poor guy at the DO.
I would like to tell you how to fix the problem but short of never promoting someone I don't think it has a fix.

I agree. . .the "Peter Principle". . .but it is, unfortunately, more insidious than this. The people who get promoted must also be boot lickers who never question the system and never oppose anyone in power. So you get the worst of both worlds.

As for bootlickers...may I introduce one named "jane"
She was a nasty, crazy person who belonged in an asylum, not working with the public! She would actively HIDE from customers, and tell them "find somebody else, I'm busy!"
She was a "breakroom supervisor" and the store gossip. When I worked with this witch as an IMA, she would just walk up to your cart and declare: "I am using this cart now! Mine doesn't work!" That was it. If you complained, she went to the SM (who she was pals with) and said you were nasty to her.
She would also go into your department's orders and change things using HER login...when asked why she did this, she said "The DH asked me to because he doesn't trust your counts! I don't know WHY I have to your YOUR work too!"
I went to that DH who not only liked my work, but informed "Jane" that she was to check with HIM AND MYSELF directly BEFORE changes were made! (Ha! take that!)
She ABSOLUTELY REFUSED to cut keys, take orders or do anything interrupting her breakroom duties--I mean, IMA work. She would get on the PA and page me to do that (Gee, like i didn't have any IMA work???)
I tried to show her how to cut keys. BIIIIIG MISTAKE! She went to the next InFocus Meeting and proudly told everybody that I did not instruct her to put on safety glasses when using they key cutter!
When we had Ops Meetings, she would CONSTANTLY whine about being given "so much ard work to do, do you want me to help customers or get this shit done?!" There went a 1/2 hr of the meeting arguing that missed price changes were not her fault..."Excuse of the Week" my other IMA and me called them.
IMAs were also responsible for signage and price labels...more than once I had ppl from her dpt's begging me to tag her aisles b/c she was "too busy" to get to it.
So after I quit, my buddy calls me up a month later and tells me the mind-wobbling (Thank you Kelly Bundy!) news..."Jane" was now the DH of At- Home-Services and Credit! AND she was bragging about her raise!
Huh?
So...so glad I quit there. That place was a trip from day one.
Thanks for letting me rant. Scum DOES rise at HD!!!! [/i]

I noticed that many in corporate management are very ambitious:they have drive and motivation to 'achieve' that title or gain that promotion but that's it.They're motivated by money and less physical work. Many want the word manager or supervisor on their resume.
But do these same individuals have the same drive to fix a problem or process.Do they the guts to tell their supervisors this isn't working,it needs fixing, things need to change etc.Problem is that many do NOT and wind becoming professional lap dogs and butt lickers.Even more scary is that their supervisors realize this, depend on this and try to capitalize on it.It becomes a vicious cycle in which the butt licker mentality prevails.
To top things off these corporate types tend not to have good people skills-they can MANIPULATE numbers and people but they can NOT manage them.

Most of them are to busy kissing ass to notice that the people on the floor keep it all going ,try and tell a manager that and they will smile and tell you. Yes the team is great and if we work harder we can meet goal this month while he sits at his computer. Or gives away something at cust service.
