Do they make all of you stay 15-30 minutes after the store closes every night?I am just wondering because we have a new store manager and she forces all of us to stay even in the commission areas.I think she is just being difficult because this has never happened in the past, one would think they wouldnt want to pay for this extra unneccesary time?

Some managers do that. I don't think that commissioned associates should have to stay though.

In my store, just about all closing sales associates are scheduled to a half hour after store closing.

Lowe's locked the doors. We were always scheduled a minimum of thirty minutes past closing. The ZM's and SM's were always AH's when it came to letting us out.

In one of our stores this happened when the ZM refused to let the associates leave. At an hour and half past time to leave he called the police department and told them he was being held at Lowe's against his will.

The police showed up and the ZM had a fit, even called the SM at home. The police demanded to see the schedule and when the associate showed him the schedule and the police verified that he was being held, they police demanded that they let him go.
Next day the associate shows up and as soon as he walked through the door he was called into the SM's office and terminated and escorted to the property line. The associate called the DM and was reinstated.

they announced in at one of our morning rallies (sunday, i think) that all people working at nite must stay to their scheduled time leave. i think if it is a 9:30 closing, they must stay to 10:00 if that is what their schedule says.
then the security ass**le in our store chimes in and says, they will walk around and lock the doors (or stay at them?) so they can't leave. HA. love to see that happen. (it won't).

they specifically singled out the cosmetic gals and said they have to go to other depts to help straighten. fortunately i never work at nite, but that really sucks.

i do think making the cosmenauts stay to help is a good idea. i am friends with a great cosmetic gal and know many of them, but let's face it. it's like a frigging tea party in that dept all day long. while we are CONSTANTLY picking up after the slob customers, they don't have to do anything but keep their precious counters tidy. it really is not fair. i know they are on comission, but at the end of the nite their are rarely a lot of potential cosmetic customers. so make them work , too !! (sorry , MAYcylady, i know you disagree on this). still love ya, tho. Thumbs Up

if they MADE me stay, i'd be the first on the phone to the police.

About a month ago, us regular associates had to stay and clean up the area where the commissioned workers already left.

Doesn't working when the store is closed bring down you SPH?

Awhile back in our store they were making everyone go over to juniors and clean out the fitting rooms, straighten etc. Of course the junior girls knew this was going to happen so they did NOTHING all night long! It works both ways. I agree cosmetics has it easy in some respects. But in our store they also do all their own stock work. No one from other depts comes over in the morning to help them put out stock.
Most nights in my store are very slow. There is enough time to straighten before closing. I can't stand it when we close at 11 and they make everyone stay till 11:30. We have been straightening since 8 cause there haven't been any customers in the store!

Yes, cosmetics does their own stock. And it is not easy! We also had to windex the counters. Hard labor, I'm telling you! Seriously, the stock is alot of work.

No, not the Windex, not the Windex!

Hi, I'm Friend Of Macy ESQ. Attorney at Law. I represent clients who have been unfairly treated by their employer and made to use Windex. Call me at 1-555-555-5555 today and lets discuss your legal settlement.

Oh, you know we don't have genuine Windex. Now that I think of it, I don't know WHAT that stuff is that they keep pouring into the cleaning bottles!

Simple! They force you to stay! Make them pay! DO NOT CLOCK OUT! I REPEAT DO NOT CLOCK OUT UNTIL YOU PHYSICALLY LEAVE THE STORE! It is illegal not to pay you for the overtime. That is what happened with the class action lawsuit in California which won us a pretty decent settlement with all the Macy's employees here who were denied breaks and lunches and were being skimmed off their paycheck for their time periods. Do I hear another class action lawsuit in your state? Hmmmmm? Evil or Very Mad

This is the type of lawsuit Wal-mart constantly has. When I go to the restroom, I take off my name badge. When I'm NOT on the clock (before or after work) I don't talk to the customers or answer any questions. PERIOD!! If a fellow associate asks me a question before I clock in, I don't answer until I am clocked IN.

This is what 30 years working with a union contract taught me.
