I worked at Costco at one time. Since management was always shifting around I never thought to ask for a reference. However I know that my record, performance reports were good. Is this an automatic reference? If I were to apply for another job, would it be a problem to call the Costco office and ask them to have my file on hand in case they were called?

Most companies simply refer them to a number that only acknowledges you worked for that company. I don't think that they can inform anybody of much else due to privacy laws.

FOM is right they cant say much but you worked there..not even a manager could give you a reference..

When I went to my present job they were looking for someone with excellent customer service skills.
(I often have to service heating and a/c equipment for high end customers in an upscale setting)
They saw Sears on the resume and that was all they needed to see , according to the guy that interviewed me.
I hope you all get that same "bounce" if you decide to bail.
Of course, I still get the comments about the "millions" I got when I quit and took out my "Profit Sharing"

I ran into the same issue with my three years at Circuit City. There is not a single person that I used to work with out of THREE stores that was still with the company as of 1 month ago.
However, a job interview is no time to be modest. You have the opportunity to tell the interviewer in your own words how outstanding your service at Costco was. Be prepared to provide specific examples, though, and be prepared for such questions as, "Please give me an example of the best customer service you ever delivered at Costco? Your best day? Your worst day? What about your work experience there makes you qualified for this position?"
Try to be positive and objective, and your experience from Costco will be an asset for you during the interview.
