First off, I posted this same topic in the Lowes forum but since it also applies to Home Depot, I'm posting here as well.....

After joining over the weekend and reading many of the posts here I'm guessing some of you will say that I'm nuts.....but at any rate I'd really like to get hired at Home Depot and I'm looking for some advice on the best way to make that happen......

I'm a recent victim of the housing crunch.....I've been in the homebuilding world for 18 of the last 23 years working for several national and large regional builders as an estimator, purchasing manager and most recently a regional purchasing guy. I worked for 84 Lumber while I was in college and for 3 years when I got out of college as a sales associate and store co-manager.

I enjoy the business and know I have a background that would be helpful to me at Home Depot.....the problem is, they don't seem to want to talk to me. I've filled out the online application a couple times over the last 5 years and I never hear from them. Lowes is the same way. Is it because I have too much experience and they think I'll want too much money? Is it because they think the only reason I'm interested is because the housing industry sucks and the first chance I get I'm going to run back? I really think if I got an opportunity there I could at least give them a couple years since things are so bad....who knows, I might like it and choose to stay. At the very least 2 years with someone who knows his stuff and will work for what they choose to pay seems like a good deal for them....doesn't it?

I know Home Depot is in a pinch right now with the economy so I'm thinking about making another run late Jan/Feb. Hopefully the economy will be looking better and there may be some positions open. Any advice would be appreciated!

When I was there, those would've been the reasons. AFAIK, the people there really aren't that knowledgeable about what you need to know.

Their PK training was a joke at best.

genpat-I think it's a bit of everything you mentioned.Especially the good experience/college which leads too many hr and exec types ASSume you will leave.

HD had a huge FT hiring spree in 2007:Frank Blake had to un-do years of Bob Nardelli sick sigma management which included going to a majority pt staff which lead to very low customer approval ratings.Throw in a bad economy HD is getting socked in many areas of the country.

There's also an unwritten philosiphy with many retail managers being that you're working retail your dumb, desperate or don't care.Retailers and others also get tax credits for hiring vets, minorities or welfare to work people.Ironically it is those in retail management that are trying the hardest to make a career path in retail.

I've over heard a manager onetime bark at a manager and HR telling them in no uncertain terms that YOU hire dumb.He had alot of complaints against him and wanted you to jump at any 'order',he was also not the sharpest knife in the drawer as well.

Forgot to add with computerized applications if don't answer just one question the right way including or fail put in certain key words for the computer to look for your done as well.
