Does anybody pay attention to the little ad boxes that are across the top of each page here on R-W?

Here's one!

Buy Www Sears Com on eBay

I'd love to be able to use Firefox, but can't, atleast not on my puter. It's a technical thing (that I cannot explain).

My daughters use Firefox, and love it.

I just thought it was funny that " Www Sears Com " was for sale on ebay.. Very Happy

LOL!!! Don't worry sleK, this is one of the very few sites that I DO allow ads on. Heck I even click on some of them a couple of times a week since I use the place so much.

But the manner in which Google constructs their content based ads does make for some funny combinations once in a while.

Don't take it personally, sleK.

Fruits of the same open source that you so support.

(sorry for the cynical tone; i've long been involved in a debate elsewhere online about the pros and cons of open source. it is, in my experience, mostly the case that those who are the biggest proponents of freebies for personal consumption are the most vocal about the injustice served against them by others who use their wares/services without compensation. anyhow, link removed. it's friday, i'm spent and probably not thinking too clearly.)

P.S. Can't you get some flashy casino ads or something? The last thing I want to see on a "Let's bitch about Sears/Home Depot/Target" site is a Sears/Home Depot/Target ad. Razz

I don't follow. My understanding is that OSS or FOSS or FLOSS is more about free as in freedom rather than free as in price.

That wasn't necessary. I've got no problem with the software itself, just it's misuse. Meaning categorically blocking all ads, no matter the circumstance, seems a little rash. If the ads were particularly intrusive or annoying I'd be more sympathetic. But a couple of banners, more often than not text-only, are pretty benign and do, in fact, support the further development of the site.

I'm the exact opposite. I believe that having the companies being criticized sponsor the venue for criticism is a wonderful thing.

That was indeed the original intent behind the idea and remains the primary "excuse" used in any debate, even though the lines between the different meanings of freedom have been blurred over time. One "free" has, over time, encroached on the other. End result - people now expect everything to be free, yet demand to get paid themselves. This is really a much broader debate and I'll leave it for a different day, a different thread.

Does not then the onus fall on the OSS developers to design the filters precisely in such a fashion? If the problem with teh internets is "intrusive ads", then surely the (FF) extension developers can and should have designed their product to filter out only ads of said intrusive nature, not ALL ads. Instead, they put out a blanket, indiscriminate solution. It all falls back on the previously mentioned broader debate - "Gimme, gimme, gimme yours for free... but pay me, pay me, pay me for mine".

Hmm... I hadn't looked at it that way. Sounds deliciously ironical when you put it like that.

P.S. r-w is whitelisted in my settings

Whitelists.

Again, I don't follow. I don't see the relationship between the browser you choose to use and the operators of the sites you choose to view with it.

FWIW, I'm completely OSS. Where possible I give back. Be it advocacy, support, bug reports, or even the odd contribution. I look forward to the day when I can release some of my own projects into the wild. But I have no expectation for free as in beer software. I choose to use free as in libre software for mostly ideological reasons.

It's pretty cool. It's another thing that I believe reflects well on the companies talked about here.
