A BusinessWeek article citing a study on Boeing who had many major layoffs. Found that those actually laid off where better off in that they didn't have the stress of thinking would they be next if they hadn't gotten the ax.
They said the remaining employees would stress out thinking would they be next.
This is just more proof have how doing things like cutting hours, disciplining and/or firing employees for petty crap like PA,closing stores and pressuring people to quit, retire or leave before their time can affect morale & business.
It also shows how why many a manager and exec manage out of desperation and fear(for their job) and not logic but what else is new. These toads don't think we notice this.

That's exactly it, DR. We've laid people off and even fired a few. Everyone at work is soooooo stressed because we don't know who's next to go. We've even had 2 people die due to the stress at work. Seriously. One of a heart attack and one of a stroke, which he suffered at work. Both were overworked to death, literally.

I would agree with that but only for initially. Yes, when you get laid off the stress is gone and you don't worry that you might be next, but then you realize you have to FIND ANOTHER JOB, which is becoming harder and harder in this economy.
Especially if you were in a decent paying job. I know people who were making more than double what we're making here at S-mart lose their jobs and panic because nothing else hiring is anywhere near that level (usually back down to min wage). People have even attempted to take their own lives over it.
It's bad on both sides of the fence, I suppose.

Too bad the Wall Street parasites didn't decide to actually reenact the old legend of 1929 and actually throw themselves from the upper floors of their building.
But then they knew all along that they were about to be the beneficiaries of the biggest robbery in history.

SearLongAgo- the stress and hunt of finding a new job
In this economy especially I can see people who fret just as much about a new job. But no matter how you look at the stress placed on employees by hanging the job over their head on a daily basis can't be good for morale or productivity.
I want to know what Sears excuse was in 2002 after the RIFs of 2001. It was like emergency dutch boy management on a daily basis between PAs,credit and remodels. That's why the company was weak enough for manipulation by ESL/mr ed. Weak, pathetic and good ol boy management didn't help either. The samething happend in 2006 less than a year after ESL control. Contrived crisis management for normal routine daily business doesn't work.
Productivity is onething but harrassment and pressure because your parity is 1% off. Lost more that 1% in sales, employees and profit with crisis management on a daily basis.
