OK, I just checked the time and it's after midnight. So it's official. I now have one year under my belt without having a single cigarette for a year. I'm sure the rest of you might not give a fuck but it's a big deal to me.
So cut me some slack and let me brag for a second. I sparked up my first one in the summer of '69. Loved it. Didn't start buying 'em 'till the summer of '73. Forty seven cents a pack. I got change back from two quarters.
It's over seven dollars a pack these days in my neck of the woods. I quit this before but never this long. Always cold turkey style. Never worked for me.
This time I did it with the patch. I ran the ten week program. Seems like this works.
I did all the things it tells you to do online. I started telling everyone I know back last June I was done when I got back from vacation. The only person I told on this site was Nofs. Of course I got his full support.
Thank's Nofs. OK, I'm done bragging. I did put on about 20 pounds but who cares. That's my story. ~GoodFella

Good for you, GF. They are high down here as well. B & H are over $60 a carton down here. Too flipping high, but I don't smoke those. The one's I smoke are about $40 a carton. Tough on what they pay us little folks.

Way to go GF! I stopped cold turkey too... On March 14, 1994 at 7:44 in the morning when I suffered a heart attack immediately after lighting up my first of the day.
I admire people who can quit and not have to have the living shit scared out of them like I did.
I have to laugh at these discussions on the price of smokes... when I first started smoking you could by two cartons for just about what one pack costs now. I look at that and thank my lucky stars I'm no longer hooked on the damned things.
USA...? I don't preach at smokers... four of my six daughters smoke... but I surely hope what happened to me doesn't happen to you... or them.

Thanks Nofs. I guess a heart attack would make most folks give it up. ~GoodFella

Congrats, Goodfella! I really admire those that stop smoking. It's a hell of an effort. It took my father nearly a year to quit and he's been off of them now six years. If I could only get my mom to quit too...
But, really, congrats! That's awesome!

Count me in as another member here who is very happy for you GF. I don't smoke but my experience via family is that it's very very hard to quit.
My father smoked on and off for years. My mom made him go with a pipe if he couldn't kick the habit. When she died in '74 he went back to cigs.
At that time he was the only household member of my family who smoked. When my brother moved out, he began smoking but has tried to quit. He told us it's sooo hard because he lives in a state known for its tobacco industry. Kids grow up huffing on the weed, supporting the local economy, as he says.
When my father remarried, the new family members (three women) all smoked.
My stepmother and one stepsister managed to quit, but they lapse sometimes. Another stepsister chainsmokes and I doubt she ever will give it up.
Based on all that exposure, it's the hardest habit to kick, IMHO. I'm glad I never took up the habit and it's why I prefer not to lecture others. I even give extra smoke breaks to one employee I manage at night, even though I personally detest the habit. He closes the store with me and I know he's struggling. I'm probably not helping things, but he's an adult and it's not for me to mommy him.
Sorry for the long post. I'm very happy for you.

Good for you Goodfella!
My last attempt to quit involved using Chantix.
The stuff works GREAT!
... until you have to stop taking that little pill once a day.
I thought I was losing my mind!
Getting off the Chantix gave me such hand-wringing anxiety that I started smoking again. I know that's no real excuse, but it is what is.
Stayed off smokes for only three months.
I really thought I was as ready as I've ever been.
I plan to try again after the first of the year. Can't go cold turkey. I'll probably try the gum this time. I dunno.
You give me inspiration, Goodfella. Thanks for sharing.

Good job on quitting!
I tried it off and on back in my younger years but just never picked up the habit.
More than 10 years ago my Dad stopped smoking the day I had to rush him to the hospital because he was having chest pains. One of the first questions they asked him at the ER was if he smoked. He said "Not anymore.".
Turned out that there was blockage in his heart but it seems that this even was enough to quickly change his habit and I'm proud of him.
Now if my Step-Mom would just kick the habit...

Ya know, belldoll, I quit too, immediately when I found out I was pregnant. Had absolutely NO urges to smoke while pregnant. It was the same with both kids.
It's bizarre how the brain works.
I need to shoot myself for picking them up again.
My hubby, who quit three years ago - had a suggestion for me... I DON'T THINK SO.

same thing for me, belldoll. As soon as I found out I was pregnant I stopped overnight. Could not stand the smoke or the smell or anything.
I tried going back several times over the years to "lose weight" - lol - but I still couldn't stand it.
Needless to say, haven't lost any weight, either!
