|
|
|
I know this thread is long overdue. I've been occupied with other matters.
On July 31, JC Penney opens in the Manhattan Mall, former site of Gimbels, the once fierce competitor to Macy's.
I pray that the Spirit of Gimbels takes over the building to bring about fierce competition.

There was an article about the new JC Penney store in the news last week and one of the ads which they are using is something to the effect .... "Finally a good dept. store in Herald Square". I got a good laugh out of that one.

Gimble's is still around, in a way. Even though the Milwaukee Gimble's was closed by Marshall Fields in 1997 -
Gimble's was owned by British American Tobacco.. (BATUS)..
BATUS shuttered Gimbles operations in 1986 - BUT part of the chain was sold off to Marshall Field. The remainder of the Gimble's chain was closed sold off, but many of it's executives are in charge of Kohl's - another division (at the time) of BATUS.
So you see, Gimble's is really Kohl's today...

Shopoholic! Why would you insinuate that I am a shopoholic? Just because my Macy's Card debt rivals the National Debt??? I'm offended!!
I used to be a dweeb about retail history. It's the only time in my life I ever got involved in history.
For instance did you know that Macy's is the reason our price tags don't end in .00? Macy's dropped their prices by 1-3 cents and customers thought they were getting a real bargain!
Macy failed multiple times at opening a store and finally succeeded in New York City - the original Macy was based out of Boston.
State Street did not become the world's largest store until 1922.
Macy's death warrant was served in 1924 when the Strauss family took it public.
It was sealed and delivered in 1986 when Finkelstein bought Macy's through a Leveraged Buy Out. It was executed in 1992 when Macy's filed bankruptcy and slowly died until Federated came in and took over.
Any questions?

(student raising hand). i have a question.
more like a statement , actually.
we DO have prices that end in .00 like INC. many of their prices are $39.00 or $79.00 for instance.
edv's end in .98 and markdowns are .99 , but regular stuff is .00.

Hmmm...
Fashion101 works at Macy's because she secretly loves Macy's with all her heart!

Did you hear that Macy's has decided to cater to the Sunday church crowd?
Now after you attend Mass/Church you can come confess your sin of spending to much money at Macy's or Bloomingdale's!
Simply go to the confessional booth located between Women's Shoes and Coach Handbags, swipe your Macy's credit card and confess your spending habits!
What's sad is I would have used this booth after my recent purchase of a new TV!
Edited to correct Confessional Booth for PC to our Jewish shoppers - The new Gossip Booth.

hmmmm... you have to delete "temple" above. jews don't have confession. we hold it in, then get consumed by guilt.
oh, we gossip, just not confess.

True.. I've always said that my family had to of been Jewish in a former life. My mother and grandmother can lay a guilt trip like none other!
I guess to make it PC they can call it the Gossip Booth so you can gossip in a department store without worrying about someone hearing you!
