No biggie.
Nothing personal against the individuals that volunteered but I simply wasn't comfortable handing off the community to anyone lacking a reasonably large personal investment in the community.
So, we're going to let the site die naturally. Put simply, you can continue to use the forum as long as you desire with one catch; there will be no new members* - registration has been disabled.
If, at some point in the future, someone willing steps up and offers to take over I'll re-visit the matter. Until that time comes things can carry on pretty much as they have.
* New registrations are a big PITA. Over 80% of them are spammers and, despite the automation, it's time-consuming to weed out and approve legitimate accounts.

Just a personal note... I would hate to see you give it up entirely. I only wish my personal and financial situation would have allowed me to do something more.
I know the people who came here to make trouble gave you a hard time and there's nothing worse than some sonofabitch who comes to your house for dinner and then spends the whole evening criticizing your house but thankfully most of them are gone now.
You've given us a place to gather for six years and a lot of us have become a kind of on line family or at least a community through that time. Like any with any family or community, we argue and bicker from time to time but when it's all said and done, most of us are in the same boat and this has been a place to try to plug some of the leaks.
Thanks a million for leaving the site up. We'll try not to track mud all over the rug.

I would certainly have the personal time to devote to the website, but not the money.
I don't want this place to go under.
I mean, with my other forums, I spend most of my time deleting spam accounts, so I know how that goes.
But I'm with Nofs--thanks for leaving the board up for us to play on! Good luck to whatever you do in the future.

sleK, Thank you.
Tremendously run joint by you since way back in day. July of '03. A long time. Great job.
Is there anyway a cooperative type situation might happen to keep this site from going dead?
Looks like none of us alone have the time or the cash to keep the joint going. But if a few of us jump in on this and pool our resources we might.
Anyway, it is what it is. However it works out. Thank you sleK. ~GoodFella
PS.
Of course it might not be the end?

yes I would add a thank you. when I first discovered the internet voices I googled "retail" and came across this site and R-W and Meet. With your Canadian view's (my neighbor) I looked and googled for more voices. The written word cannot match the face to face., but I appreciate the ability to write, and try to add to the voice that is common. Because I am uncommon amongst many voices, i appreciate that their storys are also uncommon. In other words... their voices are unique. I'm glad I get to read them, live amongst them,, and hopefully be one of them.

What exactly do you mean by "lacking a reasonably large personal investment" ??
IMHO if they didn't have a reasonably large personal investment they would not have volunteered.
Maybe if enough people here can get together collectively and pool their resources and they can run this site to keep it alive.
sleK you can still be the ADMIN but give most of the duties and abilities to a Vice admin and have atleast 5 MODS and you can just oversee things and basiclally be a semi retired admin. . . . . . . just a thought is all

You are nuts. Thank god sleK didn't hand this site off to you people.
Dog the fuckin Bounty Hunter. You pick that as your tagline. Please.

What do you want? That little kid Jervin to take this joint over? I heard he just hit 20 years old.
Is that your plan?
And five moderators? Why? Maybe not stop Amber alerts?

well, thats a bit harsh. I was hoping Slek would find a volunteer to run it, rather then let it die. I only volunteered because it falls in my interests, and I liked the idea of a place that was Bunker free. Obviously the people who have a 'reasonably large personal investment' would rather not be saddled with the daily upkeep. It would be a shame for it to close, but without someone willing to step up, I can't see how it will last.

Ordinarily, I'd suggest to someone that wasn't happy with this site to go start one of their own. In this case, I'd have to take into account the fact that some of you guys have already one that. More than once.
Considering that those efforts were total flops and people didn't come flocking to sign up... especially people from THIS site... what makes you think imposing the same concepts on this site that haven't worked on the other one(s) would accomplish anything except run them off from here?
The one thing this site doesn't need is to be turned into just another failed imitation of itself. It's always worked pretty well just being what it's been since we all came here back in July of 2003 and the last thing it needs is for someone to pop up and start making a bunch of heavy handed changes.
As for "large personal investment", I think the people who started the site and have stuck with it for six years now have demonstrated a commitment to the site that adds up to a "large personal investment" as opposed to those who went off to start their own sites because they didn't like something (or someone) here and rarely, if ever, contributed anything to the discussions here until sleK made his announcement. Some of the people popping up wanting to take over haven't posted in nigh on to a year.
I can't speak for sleK of course but I took "large personal investment" to mean a commitment to pretty much leaving the site alone and letting it be what it's always been. I would imagine there are a number of people out here who would take it over just for the already established membership but I seriously doubt that they would be capable or willing to leave well enough alone and there's nothing worse than an obsession with fixing stuff that ain't broke.
It obviously has never needed five mods or an assistant admin or any of that stuff since it's always been more successful than any of its spinoffs and certainly more successful than the spinoffs of the spinoffs.

I'm with Nofs...I haven't been with the site as long as many of you, but I agree...why change what's working, you know?
I think the community pretty much mods itself and someone might have to step in to get rid of a spam message should it ever make it's way in.
If someone got ownership of the site and started moderating hard, I wouldn't like it very much.

Who said anyone would change anything? I understand the concern, but as you have all stated, this forum has been going on for 6 years and has a dedicated following. Changing the site would be shortsighted at best (pun intended) What I don't understand is how volunteering to take over the site was wrong by either Jervin or myself. At least we offered. Its easy to sit back and not do anything. Eventually slek will get tired of paying the hosting fees and related costs for a website he no longer takes part in. And at that point you'll have one less place to voice your opinions and celebrate your wins and losses.

The site will remain for as long as it's useful to people. The only difference now is that there will be no new visitors. And whether it dies or not will depend on it's current population. Should the time ever come, then you will all be given plenty of notice.

Actually, I wasn't referring to you at all. I have no idea who you are or what you would do with the site but I have seen examples of what others have thought was an adequate "replacement" for it and wouldn't care to see some of those same procedures instituted here, that's all.
Anyway Siggy's post should put it all into perspective for everybody.

this site is wonderful. it is a great forum to meet other "workers" in the same company and most of all to VENT. it is also a great place to find out what the hell is going on in our companies. information that we SHOULD be told at our individual stores, but alas, are always the last to know.
thank you so much for all that you do to keep it up. i am DYING, DYING to leave my company and am actively looking for a different part time job. hmmm..... any openings here ??

Thanks USA.
Don't worry about nutin. Great bunch of folks at meet. No beefs at all. I love the fact it's snowing or easter over there everyday. Who could ask for anything better?
Of course I meant no disrespect DG. As a tribute toward you I have clip from the good folks at South Park.

No problem, GF.
Point is, what works for one site may not work for another site. Some sites work out, some don't. Period.

I have no idea what sleK might eventually decide to do but if he carries through with what he and Siggy both said, there's no need for site to die off for any reason but normal attrition.
I think some of those posts on TOPIX were made based more on wishful thinking and snits than anything else.

Agreed.
Sorry to be a johnny-come-lately. I had no idea.
There's no better example of a respect of differing opinions than my my initial appearance here. Right, slek?
Yet, here I still am.
I wish I could do something, but I am not computer savy.
Thanks again, slek.
(still keeping my fingers and toes crossed, though)

First of all slek, Thank You for hosting this site. Most of the time, I just read what everyone has to say, I have respect for all who post here. There have been times when I have heard about upcoming things which my managers did not know about yet. To lose this place where we can be among friends and family is a great tragedy. As long as there is a place where our voices can be heard (at least by those who care) this site will live on.
