Isn't it the time of year for the "Star Academy" awards? Has anyone heard anything about it this year?

MAYcylady, I am afraid I won the award this year...

As Terry's protege I would like to thank all the small people who helped me to get here today. I couldn't have done it without your help and your support during all the stupid new policies I have implemented. To reward myself for winning this award, I am taking what we would have paid you in bonuses and I am going to Bora Bora for a month! Thank you and Don't Cry For Me Macy's!

I have not heard as to when it will happen for my store. I do know that it happened in April last year, and without bragging excessively, I doubt too many places can top the area we use. It is on the 13th floor in an old eating area, and it just screams vintage Macy's with some modern elements when you first walk in. One of the people from jewelry made Star Academy this year. I am genuinely proud of him.

Ours is always in the Food Court. You can get a meal from ANY fast food chain you want! It's truly the highlight of the year. I HOPE I get chosen...I can just taste that Chick-fil-A sandwich now...

It's like an employee of the year recognition thingie. Only a handful of people are chosen for like uber beyond over the top outstanding service. One of the recipients last year was a visual associate who revamped the swimwear department by creating tropicana influenced headwear for the mannequins, starfish on ropes, and a sandcastle that was the highlight of the department. She recently transfered to my department, and had the junior shoe department updated with groovy elements.

I'm sure other stores would have less people. In my store, there were only forty people in the entire room, and that was including the people presenting the awards.

There are three levels: storewide, regional (which would be for the region the group of stores is situated,) and national (which would mean the entire store chain.)

MAYcylady, they actually used the food court? And national star academy is held in the New Yorker hotel. If I were to ever win national, that would be an interesting form of travel to that place. I would merely have to cross the street.

What comes with that recognition? A nice piece of paper with the person's name on it?

All this bullshit instead of a nice healthy raise? I'll take the paper; I'll wipe my ass with it. It's about what it's worth.

No, I was kidding, it's not really in the food court. It's at a nice place.
Belldoll, it's just nice to hear "good job" once in a while...at my store you don't hear that very often.

Well, national Star Academy receives a $1000 bonus, plaque, small paperweightesque award, certificiate, and a pin for the name badge. The recipient receives an extra ten percent discount for a year.

All other recipients receive everything except for the bonus and the plaque.

In my case, I did not get the extra ten percent, because a major technical garbage with my card and discount.

I agree with needing recognition every once in a while. Lately, I've been running around doing odd favors such as floor moves, tending to a vendor in trying to boost their lackluster sales (INC,) and lately helping to set up for a special event (Isaac Mizrahi came to my store to promote Liz Claiborne as in Lizzie Claiborne took an axe, gave her mother forty whacks, when she saw what she had done, she gave her father forty one.) The rep gave my manager her thanks, and my manager is supposed to give me a card, otherwise, the thanks and a metrocard might just get me places.

In my store it has nothing to do with hard work. It all has to do with who hogs the register the most. They go strictly by metrics, and usually these are the people who stand chained to the register all day, never clean, and never do anything on the floor. The whole thing is bogus. These people would run over their grandmother for a sale. They steal your customers right from under you.

sounds like you work in the same store as I do. but I'm sure there are a few of these associates in every store.

before I went on LOA, a gal from housewares, helped one of our customers shop for kids clothes, then proceeded to open a credit for them. We had enough people for one of us to help them. My co-worker told the housewares associate to get the hell out of our department and never come back.

Same in my store, except even if you have the right metrics, they won't choose you if they don't like you.
Just give me a day off with pay!

I think that goes for all stores. Every week, the people who get the funny money in the weekly rallies are those who suck up/cheat/whine all the time. One of those salespeople tried selling a sandal where the lady's pinkie toe was dangling off. He even tried selling to a homeless person. That is why I am unimpressed whenever there is a recognition event.
