I made a huge mistake, and I don't know how to UNdo it!!
Several months ago I was offered the dept mgr position of OSL&G, I was the the LNS. At the time, the only other candiate was someone so horridly unqualified and clueless there was no way I woulda been able to continue to work out there with this person. Also, we had a very knowledgable plant person in place to take my job as LNS.
sooooooooooooooo..........they offered me a pretty good pay increase, and it made sense to accept it.
It was great!.... for awhile.....then it all went to hell and I realized I made the biggest mistake , and now I want OUT! The LNS quit for personal reasons and they hired some numbskull off the street to be the LNS who knows NOTHING. The 100 days of hell is starting and I am having to do his job AND my job, and seriously, its impossible. We will fail! Im so stressed out, and the mgrs are clueless , they dont get it, and really no one really knows anything about nursery operations in the store besides me, when I try to explain the serious issues Im having their eyes glaze over and they just tell me to handle it. (Don't get me started about my zone mgr, there is no help there)
Im desperate to step down, and afraid they will deny me, because they need me.... but I need my sanity. Anybody know how I can approach this?? Without sounding like a quitter??
ps I will have no problems accepting a pay cut, I just honestly cannot run this whole show without better support, and a 'real' LNS.

Well, things just like this happen all the time, believe me, so your situation is not that unique. Just frustrating, I know. First of all, try to hang in there. These things often have a way of smoothing themselves out over the long term. I understand about trying to explain to your Zone or the SM. You're right, most of them don't want to hear about "your" problems, like "your" problems don't affect the overall operations of the store. Have you talked with your HR manager yet? Start there, and explain your situation to him/her and see what he says. He might offer some advice, or maybe even begin thinking about moving your LNS dweeb to another department and moving someone else to replace him. Hang in there and let me (us) know what happens. Right now, I wouldn't mention stepping down to your HR manager. They might view that as your being an unhappy employee who is not suited to be DM. You don't want that image to taint your chances to stay DM or advance when this thing blows over. And it will.

Well, let's see .... Ted Kaczynski (that's DR. Kaczynski), the Unabomber, was a teacher. Good thing he didn't teach his craft to, or train, his students so they could "come around" huh?

So you want to quit without sounding like a quitter? And where do you plan on going? What are you "stepping down" too? They're not going to fire the LNS because you can't manage them.

I'm wondering why you feel that you can't handle the job? If you train the LNS on the proper way to do their job it only can benefit you and your department. I can't understand the mentality behind wanting to step up to a management position yet not be willing to train those people in your department. I know it is frustrating when people are hired into a position who don't know everything to perform their job. You could actually show that you are a leader and not just a cycle counting waste of payroll and train that person. The LNS reports to the sales manager just like all of the other specialists. I can guarantee that the sales manager doesn't have time or probably even the desire to train the LNS. Take your time with this person. Show that you can do the job. If you want to step down, don't be surprised if they don't reposition you back into the LNS. You could become a hardware/tools csa IV. You never know. Poor managers are those who can not or will not pass along their knowledge. Train your replacement, that is the only way to advance in life. Also, realize that not everyone has the desire to put their job as their first priority. Lead by example. Don't wimp out just because something is difficult.

Boardwalkties,
Thank you. You are right, Ive been thinking about this and what to do for a long while now and feel like Im at wits end. But I have been at Lowes long enough now to know that the key to survival and progress is just what you advise: hanging in because everything does blow over. Ive been here before, getting to the point of frustration where I want to throw my hands up and walk out, and it always always blows over, and in the end Im always thankful I waited it out.
I have been trying to train this person. But I believe you have to have a hardworking knowledgable LNS for a garden center to be successful, and for the department manager to be successful. This person not only doesn't care about plants, but has no work ethic. If he even had a remote interest in learning, believe me I WOULD be teaching, teaching, teaching. Sadly, he just doesnt care. I dont have a spare second to train someone who doesnt want to learn, and only wants to flirt and wander the store....
cant find the LNS? look in the breakroom.
Im going to keep going, but I have to lower my expectations for this spring, and I cant let myself get too stressed out, it is what it is. I can only hope that the powers that be will see this individual (who interviewed superbably but is a dissapointment) will be removed and replaced.
I would take anybody in the building from loader, cashier, to janitor, as an LNS over this guy! I plan to speak to HR this morning, and just mention a few of my concerns. She's new, unfortunatly, doesnt know me, but hopefully has heard of my reputation and will listen.
Anyway thanks for your understanding post, and thanks for wittholding judgement- and Ill keepyou informed!
