I know this is kind of a vague question but hang in there with me. I use to work at Toys R Us as a sales associate for over a year while I was in high school. Once I graduated, I joined the US Navy and that's where I currently am. Once I get out of here I might be interested in going back to retail.

My question is what kind of experience do I need to get hired as an assistant manager? I'm talking about in retail in general. At the moment, I have no degree or anything. My resume would consistent of my time as an associate in high school and my experience in the Navy. I'm just wondering if that would be enough to get a job such as that or what would I need to do.

Just curious is all. I'm in the Navy for awhile but I'm just thinking ahead and seeing what I need to do so I'm ready when I get out.

Try going online and checking out the websites of various retailers. Most have a career section that lists job openings and what is required. Wouldn't hurt to poke around and do some research. Smile

For the most part, assistant managers operate as a back-up to the store manager. Not that this requires any special training, but an assistant manager must show a high degree of dependability and usually opens/closes the store.

Specifically, you will definitely need good cash handling skills and cash office management, the ability to balance register drawers (generally only key-holders and manager-level employees have clearance to perform this duty), figure why a register drawer is missing funds, calculate and order change for weekend business.

You may be required to understand how to budget payroll and create schedules for your co-workers based on their hourly wage and whatever the bean-counters at corporate part with from the company funds. Go over on payroll and you will hear about it.

That's the practical side of the job. You'll also have to be a motivator, cheerleader, footsoldier, mine-sweeper for problems, counselor for struggling co-workers, diplomat for pissed-off customers. If your background in the Navy gives you a leg up on this, don't be shy to express it during an interview session.

You'll probably find more success searching for positions like "team lead" "keyholder" or "sales leader" for a retail operation. When you interview, let the manager know you are interested in developing a career up to assistant manager. If you are interviewing with the assistant manager (and this usually happens) be very careful of expressing your career goals. The assistant manager may see you as someone after his/her job and nix you just for that alone.

I'm interested in being that keyholder, the guy who opens/closes the stores and the guy who the associates go to when they need help or have a question. I want to be the guy who makes the schedule for the store. I'm sure I could articulate somehow that the Navy has given me the skills to complete those tasks but I was just wondering if a college degree was usually required for those type of positions.

My preferred employer would be Toys R Us since I'm use to it and I like the products they sell.
