Is it me or does everyone get this way with new employees? Look I realize when you get someone new, they are still in the training mode of things but I get frustrated with a few that think they already know it all!

In retail, I don't mind sharing my knowledge of the company! I guess it is the teacher in me but there have been times when the new employee thinks they already know more on their first day!

Sometimes I just want to shake them and say Quit with the attitude? You think you know it all! Fine, you're on your own!

Has anyone experience this?

Yes. I used to be the one they would use to mentor new associates. Until I got hold of a girl who kept telling me that what I was telling her was wrong. It wasn't what they told her in training. I tried to explain to her that the training is fine, but the work on the floor is the real world, which is often different. She said she was told that all she had to do was sell. She said they didn't say anything about stock work. She complained that I was too harsh, so I was no longer a mentor.

Thanks. I just get frustrated with newbies who think they already know everything! After giving me attitude, I just want to let the sink when they run into a problem with a customer they can't handle!

I was training a brand newbie in cosmetics...who had NEVER worked in retail before. Everything I told her, she said that she already knew. Then she proceeded to "decorate" the counter the way that she felt that it should be. Mind you, there are strict standards that the cosmetics vendors must adhear to. Finally, I just gave up. Since she already knew everything, I didn't see the point of boring her with my many years of expertise!

oh yeah. we get them all the time. yes, they know it all till something trips them up (the register, usually). feeling sorry for the customer i usually jump in right about then. Afterwards, i explain what i did and why.

my experience is the ones with the MOST attitude.....NEVER LAST> NEVER.

I must admit that when I first started at Rich's, I thought I knew everything. After all, I was in management at Belk. But, I was set straight the first day, because they explained to me that I couldn't do displays as I wanted to, because there was a zone-a-gram. I protested, but it was the way they did it. I found that there were things I could do on my own, but they had to be cleared by the manager. And then she would conviently forget she approved it.

Those darn zone-a-grams! I had a lady come in and move everything around, and when I tried to explain to her that we have to do things according to the zone-a-gram, she said that was stupid, and she should be able to do it the way that she wants.
Okay.

I just love how new people always get treated better than older associates!

Get out of my way I know what I am doing! Just because your too stupid to move into management doesn't mean you can tell me what to do!

Now how in the heck do you long on the dang register?

What Plan-O-Gram? Price Audit? Inventory? Cycle Counts? Dressing Room?

Thats what your here for! Go do it while I make sales and open credits... Wait... how do I open credits?

Ummm... Take this job and shove it up your "SECURITY"

FOM, you may not realize this, but Macy's puts no value on long time associates. They are something to be "tolerated", until they quit, retire, or die, or can be offered a package. (yes Normarae, I said the word package!) There is a whole subject in the new hire program training on how to treat your co-workers who are longtimers! It is a video by Terry Lundgren himself!

I think Macy's naturally uses visual impairment to make the fine print on your employee contracts much smaller so that you really don't see that employee exploitation will be part of your job description.

Today, while over in my area minding my own business, I hear a person screaming "HELP!!! HELP!!! SOMEBODY HELP ME!!!". It sounded like a person who was hurt or in danger. I go to the edge of the department and peek around the corner, only to see an old lady looking for someone to ring her up. I couldn't believe it. I just went back to what I was doing. Hopefully, she finally found someone to ring her up. I should have told her to try walking to another register instead of standing there yelling like a person that has been injured.

You should have ignored her! That should show her how outstanding service is part the company where employees hide from customers!

EX, I DID ignore her! Normally, I would have gone over and helped her, or called a manager, but I was SO annoyed that she was just standing there screaming, and that I had thought that there was an emergency.

oh geez, the old ladies who come in screaming ? sigh. why did i think they only come into my store ?? Doh!

they make themselves look like such asses...and the thing is, they don't care. they just want to get their 2 pair of socks rung up. that's all. oh, and they have 3 coupons to use. oh, and they forgot their charge card. oh, and they don't know their social security number....have to find the little wrinkled original worn soc/sec card issued to them in 1936 (gosh was soc security even "invented" yet? ). oh, but now that they found it, they don't want to give out the number. oh, ok. they will.....but now they can't seem to punch all the little numbers into the little box....at least not without dropping their cane that was hanging on the wrap stand.......

sigh.....it's a BITCH gettin old.... Sad

My pet peeve is when we have an isolated wrapstand in a large department and have only a couple people on the floor, ringing at the main wrapstand (the one with the big CUSTOMER SERVICE sign overhead)... the store puts up a notice in an 11 by 14 signholder that says: "This counter is currently not in use. The counter located on the aisle to your right is available. We apologize for the inconvenience." (Or something similar to this)

I can be walking by, wearing a black cardigan with a name badge, with a radio headset, carrying merchandise to package pick-up, and have a customer stop me in the aisle and ask: "Do you work here?"

HUH? WHAT? Uh...no, ma'am. I dress this way to blend in so that Macy's won't suspect me of spying...

"There's no one here to help me." She's pissed.

She's standing right in front of the freakin' "currently not in use" sign. I can look twenty feet ahead to my right and see two associates assisting or ringing purchases. Under the overhead sign that says CUSTOMER SERVICE.

I direct her to the wrapstand down the aisle.

"But I've looked all over and there's no one here to help me!"

I explain again.

"I can't find anybody in this store to help me!"

I grit my teeth and try not to grab her by her bony elbow and drag her down the aisle, and try one more time...

"I've looked all over and you people need more help on the floor!"

That's it. I radio down to one of the associates close enough that I could read her name badge, and she comes over. The guest is still pissed. The associate escorts her twenty feet to the next wrapstand, but the guest wants to know why she can't just ring her up HERE.

It's at that point I have to walk away before I do something I know I'd regret.

And actually, one time I had a customer so insistent that there were no associates anywhere to help her (after I asked if she needed help -- and she was just around the corner from the main wrapstand area), she just set her merchandise down on a table and walked away from me, bitching about there not being any help in the store.

Easy solution. Tell the register is broken on that register! Unless she wants to wait a LOOOOOOOOOOOONG time for it to process her transaction.
