Probably heard but a Home Depot employee was fired for pursuing a shoplifter and calling police.Fired for doing the right thing?
Company said someone could have gotten hurt but someone will get hurt if you let theives create anarchy and do as they please.Isn't there a criminal offense for NOT reporting a crime like aiding and abetting in someone's gettaway?.
It's one thing to lecture or reprimand an employee for this but to fire?.
I guess this explains why I saw customer take a new saw from the tool aisle ,cut his stuff and take it back to the shelf and not one HD employee did a thing,no one cared,no one knew what to do.But now HD lost out on a possible purchase, tool rental,a cut charge and is selling used merchandise as new. Naughty!

I had to sign a sheet stating that I would not get involved in dealing with thieves in any way, other than advising LPS about what I witnessed.

If this guy decided to play hotshot, then he got what he deserved. However; if the company cannot prove that he was advised of this company policy, then it is a very different situation.

There have been times at my Depot where our LP's have asked associates for help in detaining someone.

In my 2+ years there, its happened twice and one associate got fired. It was ridiculous since even a manager had asked them to go help the LP guy.

He probably broke a policy in which he wasn't suppose to pursue anyone outside store grounds. I can understand why the LP manager would do this but this could have jeopardized his safety for trying to pursue the shoplifter outside the store.

Um what are they supposed to do beat them up?

It's not doing the right thing given that employees don't have handcuffs...

companies have polices not to have weapons...so how do you know what customers might have?

You don't know if they have a knife or a gun or have a disease.

Is it worth it to get hurt just to get product back?

That's like cops shooting a bank robber...whats the point since it's just paper and FDIC will pay it back anyway.... Neutral
