Well, I'm not reading it yet, but it happens to be on my nightstand:
"Isaac's Storm: The Drowning of Galveston, 8 September 1900" by Erik Larson. (It's about the unnamed hurricane that wiped out most of the Texas coast 105 years ago.)
I picked this book up after Katrina hit NOLA. We'll see if I get around to cracking it open. May be a little busy. Rita's comin'.

That sounds very timely camper. Let me know how it goes, I love non-fiction.
I happen to be reading the "All Creatures Great and Small " series by James Herriot. I was craving something light, and heartwarming (weird pregnancy thing, I guess) so I made a trip to my favorite store- Half Priced Books. They had the whole set of 5, PLUS a book with photographs of Yorkshire England landmarks featured where James Herriot is still a practicing vet.
If you like animal stories, and great "brit wit" check these out sometime.

sleK,
I don't know if you take "Discover" magazine, but there was an interesting article about Richard Dawkins called "Darwin's Rottweiler".

I still need to pick up "The Blind Watchmaker".
That'll be next for me maybe.

That's such a brilliant book. I wish I could find my copy or remember who I may have lent it to.
Despite the fact that I purchased it months ago, I still need to read "The Ancestor's Tale"... I suppose I should add that to my list too.
That Discover article, being mostly about Dawkins' character, precisely describes the attributes that attracted me to Dawkins' writings. He has this particular aversion to willful ignorance that totally resonates with me.

It figures I pick up the mail AFTER my husband and I had our spirited debate over Intelligent design vs evolution. I wish I'd had some "Dawkins-isms" under my belt for that round.
*For the record, Mr Tigerlily was playing devil's advocate and siding with the ID's. He is a damn good debator.

Very interesting!
Next time I need some insight into the mid-east conflict, I'll know where to start. Thanks Bucky.

Angels and Demons (Dan Brown) - imaginative beginning, redundant and dissappointing ending. Almost like Brown ran out of ideas, then rearranged and salted the first few to drag it to 500 plus pages. On a scale of 1 -> 10 (10 being whatever you wish) - it's a 5.

Hey Siggy-
I read that after I had read "Da Vinci Code". I didn't like it as well. Come to think of it, I didn't like "Da Vinci Code' much after re-reading it. I think the benefit of his books is that they get people thinking about relgion in new ways. I like how he chalenges peoples perceptions of what they think they know inside and out. Not the most factual, but thought provoking.
I just found my copy of "Billions and Billlions". I bought it a while ago and since I'm done with the Herriot series, maybe I'll dig into that.
sleK- How's your night stand? Any lighter?

Sounds like WHTS.
Any ideas from any of y'all for books for Christmas for a 25 yr old male who enjoys techy, some sci fi, or sports-fishing?
The last book I read was a book my daughter had from college, The Awakening by Kate Chopin. It takes place in Louisiana and I read it right before Katrina hit. I'm reading Big Fish now.

Was that the inspiration for the movie of the same name?
Great movie.
