President Bush signs American flags for workers at Beaver Aerospace and Defense (link)

U.S. Code, Title 4, Chapter 1, Section 8 (g):

Quote:
"The flag should never have placed upon it, nor on any part of it, nor attached to it any mark, insignia, letter, word, figure, design, picture, or drawing of any nature."

Big oopsie! Doh!

If one were to take that code 100% literally, then every time a flag is draped over a coffin of one of our fine servicemen it would be the equivalent to desecrating the flag:

same code, from same link as Kanaka:

"The flag should never touch anything beneath it, such as the
ground, the floor, water, or merchandise."

If codes, statutes and laws were indeed taken 100% literally 100% of the time, this would be a better world in general. Why make a law or a code if you're going to pick and choose when and where you are going to apply it "literally"?

Then do you agree that draping a coffin of a dead serviceman with a flag is a violation of the code also?

Aren't you the one Kanaka who thinks illegal aliens should not be deported or jailed?

If it boils down to following the "code" 100%, then absolutely.

No, I'm the one who thinks that illegal aliens should not be deported or jailed without due legal process. In the future, if you are going to use my own words to characterize me, please use all of my words. Thanks.

I didn't use your words Kanaka, I asked for clarification of your words as I did not remember completely. Thanks for clarifying it. Based on your clarification, I am very happy that you agree with me that the deportation and jailing of all those muslims rounded up after 9/11 was within the boundries you have set of appropriate action.

As to your feelings on the "code".

I agree with you believe it or not.

However, the code needs to be updated in my opinion. Similar to the way the anti-sodomy laws in many states needed to be updated. Of course, you also were against folks that practiced sodomy in state's that had outlawed it, as it was a violation of the "code", right?

Yes to that last question.

I also agree that many laws and codes need to be periodically revised, keeping in check that no human rights are trampled on in the process. Then again, that opens a whole other can of worms, such as what constitutes a human right and what does not. Perhaps that is why so many laws and codes have remained unchanged since their inception - to keep a lid on that other can of worms.

Why is there no "exparation date" on laws? Say after 30-50 years the law MUST be reviewed and voted back in by the city council, congress, senate, etc.

I mean, how many "Don't park your horse in your stable if you are a black woman after 5:00 pm on a Sunday" laws are still clogging up the books? We've all seen those endless "stupid and silly laws still in effect" lists people feel the need to forward to us every now and then.... why not have a way of "Spring cleaning"? This seems like a logical progression of the "checks and balances system"...

Or do we actually have this on all laws, and someone would care to enlighten me?

Think of what our founding fathers expected. Do you think they expected a respected national organization like the California Bar Association to have the nerve to suggest that a new law be passed that only lawyers can practice law?

Do you think the founding fathers thought that our book of laws should be so large that people spend their whole lives trying to understand them?

Do you think the founding fathers expected Congress to pass 100 new laws for every 1 law that is removed?

I suspect not.

Also from the same link Kanaka provided:

" No part of the flag should ever be used as a costume or athletic
uniform."

Does that mean that Bruce Springstein wearing a red, white, and blue costume intentionally similar to the flag in appearance is a violation of this as well?

Let's have at 'em!

Yes.

I thought we already covered that point, Ickimore. If we're to take "codes" seriously, then Madonna should get the flag off her chest and Springsteen should get it off his crotch.

OK, I just wanted to check, because I am a bit surprised. The stringent following of laws and codes is normally a conservative issue and not a liberal issue. As I have known you to be very liberal through your past posts, I was a bit confused about your support of a conservative ideal (things are black and white when it comes to law).

I have a confession to make. I am guilty of breaking the following law:

U.S. Code as of: 01/22/02
Section 2382. Misprision of treason

Whoever, owing allegiance to the United States and having
knowledge of the commission of any treason against them, conceals
and does not, as soon as may be, disclose and make known the same
to the President or to some judge of the United States, or to the
governor or to some judge or justice of a particular State, is
guilty of misprision of treason and shall be fined under this title
or imprisoned not more than seven years, or both.

The reason I am in violation of this law, is because I have specific knowledge that Sean Penn has commited treason, and I did not make it known to any judge, governor, or the president. The violation of the below law is why Sean Penn has commited treason:

U.S. Code as of: 01/22/02
Section 2383. Rebellion or insurrection

Whoever incites, sets on foot, assists, or engages in any
rebellion or insurrection against the authority of the United
States or the laws thereof, or gives aid or comfort thereto, shall
be fined under this title or imprisoned not more than ten years, or
both; and shall be incapable of holding any office under the United
States.

Sean Penn gave aid and comfort to Iraq when he went on his Iraq tour earlier this year. I feel so much better now that I have confessed to my crime!

Kind of curious Kanaka on your take on this. Do you agree that I have broken the law by not notifying the proper authorities about Sean Penn? Do you also agree that Sean Penn has broken the law? How would you propose to deal with these violations of law?

Ickimore, if it were night time, I'd dismiss your adamacy to a few "cold ones". It is currently 2:10PM EST, I have no idea what you've been up to and what possesses you to pursue this Sean Penn issue. I don't even like him.

Kanaka, I never said you did like him. I was just wondering if you also believe that I broke section 2382 of the code, and if Sean Penn broke section 2383 of the code. Did we?

Sean Penn is also guilty of violating section 2381 of the code:

U.S. Code as of: 01/22/02
Section 2381. Treason

Whoever, owing allegiance to the United States, levies war
against them or adheres to their enemies, giving them aid and
comfort within the United States or elsewhere, is guilty of treason
and shall suffer death, or shall be imprisoned not less than five
years and fined under this title but not less than $10,000; and
shall be incapable of holding any office under the United States.

Kinda tough to say: "If it boils down to following the "code" 100%, then absolutely." if you aren't willing to follow it when you don't like the result, isn't it?
