The downside: needs broadband
The upside: way more cool than Flight Simulator; incredible imagery; absolutely FREE

World Wind lets you zoom from satellite altitude into any place on Earth. Leveraging Landsat satellite imagery and Shuttle Radar Topography Mission data, World Wind lets you experience Earth terrain in visually rich 3D, just as if you were really there.
Virtually visit any place in the world. Look across the Andes, into the Grand Canyon, over the Alps, or along the African Sahara.

171MB download + 6.3MB patch.
System Requirements:
Windows 2000, XP Home, or XP Professional
Intel Pentium 3, 1 GHz, or AMD Athlon or higher
256 MB of RAM
3D Graphics Card
nVidia GeForce 2 Ultra
ATI Radeon 7500
Intel Extreme Graphics 2
DSL / Cable connection or faster
2 GB of disk space
You start at about 10km above the planet. You enter your destination and zoom in. The software retrieves topographic maps from the nasa server as needed, so that's where broadband comes in. Sorry, dialup simply won't do for this imagery.

Cool. Downloading now. Hope my vid card can manage it. It's supported but it's listed as only "ok".

By the way, cool Area-51 pics there. I think they've pulled most of them, but you can still see Groom Lake, NV

I keep forgetting stuff. On google maps, try typing in Hoffman Estates, hit search, then switch over to Satellite mode (top right) and see if you can track Fast Eddie.

This is about as close as world wind gets without looking all crappy. I superimposed a screenshot from google maps in order to pinpoint my location. The tip of the arrow is literally right where I am.
Google maps is cool. I've never actually seen it before.
