I started this thread as a follow up to a news story from today's NY Times.
They're saying this has been the roughest summer in 55 years for young people looking for work.
Traditionally, retail has been one of those sectors to offer a lot of youth employment. But now, it seems jobs are getting just as scarce here as anywhere else.
Is anyone out there looking for work right now? For those of you who have jobs, are your employers doing any hiring? What's going on on the ground?

I cant find a job anywhere. I applied at 2 Walmarts, 2 Walgreens, 2 K-Marts, 2 Sentry Stores, Burger King (desperation), Subway, a gas station, Target, 2 Ace Hardwares, Menards, Blockbuster, Circuit City, Best Buy, and Dean Marines (who someone who worked there told me just fired 2 people) and still havnt got a single call back. At this point i've given up. There is simply nowhere else around me to apply. My summer is shot. There go my hopes of getting a car.
Also, i wasnt sure how to put my vote in the pole. Just chalk one up to the cant find a job anywhere collumn.

Lowes usually hires in alot of "Seasonal" people. They will keep you on for 90 days they the store has to decide weither to keep you and make you a full time employee or kick you out the door. The only problem is that you can be let go at anytime, no holiday pay, no benifets. But if you need somthing temp, it might be a good choice. You will be worked like a dog, just to fore warn you

Along with good timing I noticed alot of companies tend to pick from on-line applicants as opposed to in store and/or paper app applicants. The only problem with online or any computerized app is THAT;it is computerized so one mis-step in wording or availability hours or even giving old salaries can knock you out of the box.
And alot of those prepinted NOW HIRING signs frequently mean the company is just fishing for the ultimate applicant wether it be salary or qualifications.I think the Lowes suggestion is good:not only do you have seasonal hiring but alot of students start leaving jobs in the spring.
Good Luck
