It's already been established that "right" and "wrong" are measured using a number of factors.
To name a few:
1) circumstance
2) result
3) intent
If ya wanna to get legal, you can throw in "precedent" as well.

Who cares? It has absolutely ZERO bearing upon this topic.
The question was; are morals relative or absolute?
Your focus on perceived motivations does not address the question.

Yes! We've all been brainwashed! Death penalty for pen thieves! /sarcasm

you could also throw in mental capacity.
the right or wrong test and diminished capacity test both hold up in court.

I totally agree, fair is fair.
What may be just a pen to you may be someone elses' lifeline.

A person is in trouble - serious trouble - the person is despondent, suicidal - the person has a firearm - I decide to take (steal) the firearm - the person asks if I know of its disappearance - I say no (I lie) - right or wrong?

There is no absolute right or wrong IMO. What there is, are a series of measurements society uses to keep everything within the bounds of general civil acceptability.

Wrong.
Under these circumstances lying provides no tangible benefit to either party.

If you borrowed the pen in the owners' presence, returned it very shortly thereafter and there were no qualms in between, then it should be okay. If, however, you perceived a "dirty" look from said "acquaintance", you should return the instrument promptly and never resort to such practice again.
Friends will be friends, but when it comes to property "ownership", all rules go out the window and you must feel your ground out before trodding on it. Humans are funny that way, even online.
I've never been funny that way, always been "easy", but that's just me.
