After my own experiences with SAC, I am NOT surprised that this crap is still going on. We don't have much of a chance at saving this company if these practices continue.

What I would really like to know is WHY did this happen? WHY are the Sears shops the ones doing the most unnecessary repairs and the shoddy work?
Have the mechanics been told to do these things by Sears, ie: Management? Have they been told to replace perfectly good parts and to damage others in hopes of return business, or do we just have highly incompetant mechanics?
What is the real reason why these incidents are occuring? and since they are happening at nearly all of the Sears Auto Centers, that makes me believe it is not accidental.
Can anyone out there who works at a SAC answer these questions for me? Are your managers telling you to do this?

The thing that amazes me is that there is a 20/20, or a 60-Minutes, or Dateline, or some other exposé about "those cheating garages" every single year!!! What are these people thinking?!
Amazing!

My hubby is a mechanic, not for Sears, but he has his bosses coming down on him for not selling. He is a great mechanic and only sells what is needed. It is all about the bottom dollar for the bigeigsm they don't care who gets screwed in the meantime.

I'm a mechanic for SAC and I have never been asked by a manager to do anything like that. I have been encouraged by former District Managers to do alignments without doing other necessary repairs, i.e. ball joints , tie rod ends, etc. because the customer either couldn't afford to do all repairs or wasn't there to authorize it. Those DMs have since moved on and the jury is still out on the present DM. The reasoning is that if we don't do the work , someone else will.
It's kinda like drugs when it comes to doing unethical , illegal, oe unsafe repairs...."JUST SAY NO ! " That is up to the individual mechanic to refuse to do unethical work. That said, SAC is like everything else in life....in any group of people ,you have some who are just plain dishonest. And you never hear about the money a customer is saved by the mechanic who says" Your brakes are within manufacturers specifications at this time. I recommend you have them re-inspected in 6 months." In the SACs I have worked in this happens as often as not. Keep in mind , the addage "No news is good news." You always hear the bad press, rarely the good press.
I'm not saying it doesn't happen, because it is an industry wide problem, not just a Sears problem. As long as you have a pay scale that is commissioned on repairs it will be a problem. And I'm not defending SAC, Sears, or their practices. I have my own issues with Sears. But to say it is happening in nearly all the Sears Auto Centers is probably slightly in error, since we have no way of knowing whether it is or not.
