I was just reading a few of J. C. Penney's quotes. Here are a few.
http://www.brainyquote.com/quotes/authors/j/james_cash_penney.html
"We can serve our customers well only if our buying jobs are right. You cannot sell if you haven't ordered wanted goods into your store. "

"The well-satisfied customer will bring the repeat sale that counts."

"The men who have furnished me with my greatest inspiration have not been men of wealth, but men of deeds" (Guess who that would leave out.) Evil or Very Mad

"A store's best advertisement is the service its goods render, for upon such service rest the future, the good-will, of an organization"

The only thing from "Fast Eddie" might be.
"Screw them all but six, save them for pallbearers."
Naughty!

Outstanding !!!

That sums up what Sears once was as was Penney's.

The key there beside service is that of a return customers-who hasn't been abused and blugeoned to death to buy a PA,credit and actually got what the came for including good service.

Man, those standards are too high for this crew.

“We are not in business to grow bigger for the sake of size, nor to become more diversified, nor to make the most or best of anything, nor to provide jobs, have the most modern plants, the happiest customers, lead in new product development, or to achieve any other status which has no relation to the economic use of capital. Any or all of these may be, from time to time, a means to our objective, but means and ends must never be confused.

....

We are in business solely to improve the inherent value of the common stockholders’ equity in the company.”

Former CEO of Indian Head Mills.

'... but means and ends must never be confused '

But they are and is why the US economy is in the crapper today.

Stockholder 'value' should be a side effect of the condition of the business now the business suffers from the side effects of stock price.
