Actually it may not be fair to call these people stupid. Many have simply been given false information designed to frighten them into doing the dirty work for the insurance companies and are acting based on that information.
Senator McCaskill held a health care town meeting in MO last week. She noticed there were quite a few elderly folks in the audience and asked how many were on Medicare. A whole bunch of their hands went up. The she asked how many of them wanted to be taken OFF Medicare... in other words to be set free to obtain their own insurance based on "market forces" and current price structures.
Only a tiny number of hands went up this time. Obviously some of them knew they were there to shill for the insurance companies but weren't willing to back up their canned rhetoric with any real action when their bluff was called but more than a few should have stopped right there and considered what the hell they were doing.
it's a lot easier to shout "Nazi" and paint Hitler mustaches on pictures than to face your own hypocrisy and deal with the issue itself which is why the bloated one keeps throwing that kind of garbage out there for the ignorant to pick up on. And it continues to work.
People who are ON a government sponsored tax funded insurance program are fighting tooth and nail to keep everyone else from having what they've got. I used the word stupid in the Title for this post because I couldn't think of any other word that describes the total disconnect we're seeing in these people. It may have been too strong a word.
Anyway.... here's a perfect example of the success of the right's well oiled propaganda apparatus doing it's thing:
New poll finds that 39 percent of Americans want government to ‘stay out of Medicare.
I suggest that the government identify as many of these 39 percenters as they can and simply do exactly what they are demanding the government do... get out of their Medicare. Cancel them. Give them exactly what they're asking for.
Maybe... just maybe... the first time they needed medical treatment and were turned down because they didn't have insurance, they might get an idea of what life is like for the millions of still working people who can't afford the insurance these oldsters are trying their damnedest to force on them and would realize that Medicare IS the government.
Then again... maybe stupid isn't so inappropriate after all.

The whole health care debate has entered into the realm of absurdity, and I don't think it will ever come back to the realm of reality. The right is so determined to implant negative impressions into the minds of the average american and they have said all the different falehoods so often now that I think they themselves truly believe the gibberish they are spouting.
The republicans came in with thier panties in a wad because thier version of a health care reform bill wasn't going to be discussed. I guess being the minority in congress gives you the right to lead the way in one of the biggest changes for the average american in american history? Ever since, instead of discussing whats actually in the bill that's good or bad, they have taken the tact of playing the vitcim and claiming they are being railroaded, and using the new nifty catch-phrases like socialist and nazi.

That's been going on ever since the internet existed as a forum for interaction. You should have seen some of the discussions that used to go on right here on the various employee forums... and every talking point you see being used against health care reform... every twist and spin of everything anyone said in opposition to those talking points... and every accusation of Socialism, Communism or whatever "ism" du jour happened to be... every defense of every indefensible thing the hate radio jocks ever said or did... accusations of everything from hating our troops to being outright traitors and wanting to see "America Fail" because you've dared to say Bush was wrong about something (and how's THAT for hypocrisy given what's going on now???) and finally the regression to third grade name calling (Monkey girl, bitch, old fool, etc.) followed exactly the same pattern that's being followed today in national arenas.
It's like a bunch of little small minded robots all walking in lockstep and spewing the same canned "messages" everywhere they go. In fact it still goes on. People who were banned from this forum for example, still come here, read what's posted, then go back to whatever little forum or blog that hasn't banned them yet and thunder their hatred for people that their captive audiences of 6-10 people tops never heard of.
It's easy to turn on the hate spigot... unfortunately once you have it turned on, it's almost impossible to shut it off again. I seriously doubt that we'll ever see the America I grew up in again and I'm not all that sure the country can survive the kind of divisiveness and polarity that people like Limbaugh and Beck and that ilk are being allowed to foment.
There's no attempt made to talk to one another and arrive at a solution that benefits the most people. Heath care reform for instance... the Republicans agreed even before Obama took office that they were not going to support any kind of reform. It doesn't make any difference what happens to you and me, or how many concessions are made... they are simply out to make Obama fail so they can get back in power that much quicker and as we've seen, they'll go to any lengths to make damned sure that happens.
