Half of the fashion accessories department called off yesterday...so I got floated over from Men's (22 y/o guy selling jewelry....I was completely lost!). Customer wanted a clearance watch (still $65 though), but it had a dead battery, so we couldn't verify that it worked.
Called the zone manager...only to be told not to sell it, and to print a damage ticket for it.
WHAT??
Asked if we could just buy a battery for cust. from Fine Jewelry.
No.
But it's the only one we have.
Find it at a different store.
Can we at least waive the send fee then?
I don't know, as kthe other store's manager.
So, manager was going to risk making a customer all peeved off AND damage a perfectly good $65 item, instead of paying $2.50 for a battery.
Bull crud.
Doesn't this seem ridiculous? I ended up just prying the battery out of another watch, plopping in watch customer wanted, and all was happy.
Darn it Macy's, you should know better.

I have never heard of damaging a watch out because of a dead battery. Our Jewelry department at Wal-Mart had tons of spare batteries that we could use if a watch died on us. I think that ZM may be just a tad lazy or just doesn't care how much the damages cost the store.

It is common practice in our store to damage out watches with dead batteries. Have been doing it for years. Fine jewelry (currently Finley's -which is on its way out) does not carry batteries even for their watches. We send customers to Dakota Watch in our mall.

I don't know about watches, but I damage out ANYTHING that doesn't look like a normal person would buy. WHO would buy pantyhose that have been taken out of the package? Or kids underwear that has been taken out of the package? Bras that look like they have already been worn? I know I wouldn't. I just damage them out. Beats letting the items sit there for 10 years.
Anyway, it sounds like you are an OUTSTANDING associate. I hope they gave you a good "tell us what you think"!

omg..we have a dakota watch kiosk also !!!
when a customer wanted a watch that was dead, i sent em out to the mall to get a battery replaced and told them to bring it back with the reciept. i then did an exchange for them and THEN deducted the price of the battery replacement on the watch. everyone was happy. they got their watch with a new battery, i sold the watch, and the batter guy in the mall was happy as well. win-win-win.
the managers (SM included) always said it was ok to do that. these were NOT fine jewelry watches, tho. they (finlay) took care of their own stuff....they had tons of batteries for THEIR watches. they would not fit the fashion watches, i don't think.

You're lucky. The Macy's I use to work at had to sent watches out to contracted jewelry repair with Macy's just to change a battery. We were never trained for things like this so if the customer was willing to wait two weeks for a battery change. If the customer was going to be argumentative about it, I would just return it since Macy's didn't really care too much about their merchandise and my rate of pay wasn't even worth the grief.

Our fine jewelry dept. doesn't sell batteries. I bought a very expensive watch from them, and when the battery finally went dead guess what? Too bad for me, I had to go somewhere else.
Oh yes, I also damage out most returns in the home store; no one wants to sleep on something that someone has already tried out.

This is exactly what we do, also. Except we send battery customers to a little kiosk run by two brothers. In addition, for the last several years, we've let the guys supply us with a stack of coupons for 20% off watch batteries at their shop. It works out great; we make battery and repair customers happy (we get a lot of requests for battery purchases or watch service) and the brothers refer customers to us when their customers' repair costs would be better spent buying a new watch. Win-win.

I've seen stuff like that happen all the time in shoes. There was one pair that was sent to be damaged, because the suede looked a little odd on one boot. There was another one because the print looked different on each shoe. My favorite one is when a merchandise handler (we use shoe locator in my department) scans a shoe and it doesn't come up on inventory. Rather than bring it to the appropriate stock room, it gets sent to damages.

Well of course...this makes sense. When I work mens furnishings I damage EVERY return, unless it's clear the item has never been opened. Who wants used underwear???
On the other hand, replacing a watch battery is normal maintenance and could return the item to a perfectly sellable state.
Our escalator broke recently, so they replaced the parts....we didn't buy a new one!

You really should have damaged out that escalator and gotten a new one. I never use escalators that have been repaired. Who does that???

A repaired escalator? Oh my *faints*! I think they should have replaced the entire store! I mean, the audacity of them to just repair the escalator! *faints again* What is this world coming to when you can't even go into a Macy's with a nice safe escalator!
Actually I went into Nordstrom the other day and their escalator was also broken. They paid people to stand on either end and direct customers to the elevator.

Yeah, that's my job now. I cannot bear to let people use a repaired escalator, so I direct them to the elevator. The only problem is that with Macy's being so cheap, they only have ONE person doing this job! You can imagine how busy I am going up and down, up and down!

Happened at my store too....sort of...
Customer was shopping with very elderly mother. Too afraid to get on escalator. Elevator is stuck between floor 2 and 3 (with manager inside ).
"So, m'am, you're elderly mother is know considered freight. I'll show her to the dock so she can use the freight elevator."

So...today this lady returned her Donald wig. I couldn't believe it, since it has been a while since we had them. Of course I was going to damage it, I mean hello, it has been on someone's head for goodness sakes! But the people in line behind her started fighting over who was going to get to buy it, so I went ahead and sold it to the next person in line. By now it was marked down to a penny, so I sold it for $9.99. The person probably wanted to sell it on ebay.

We used to SELL those Donald wigs?
People still WANT them?
Wish I had known that earlier! We've had four cases -- three unopened -- in our intimates (lingerie) stockroom for the past couple of years and marked them out-of-stock for store use.
They've come in really handy -- like when we run out of paper towels in the restrooms, or if the cleaning crew needs an replacement head for a dust mop. We've even used a couple to help contain hazazdous chemical spills in the hair salon. But the best use was when we donated one to our local humane society to provide shelter to a litter of orphaned baby groundhogs. It made the local news and everything. We even got a call from Oprah.

Huds, they sold for $200.00!!! They FLEW out of the store. I can't believe you are using them to clean!
You have three cases? I'm on my way to your store to get them. I'll wear my Donald wig, so you'll know it's me. Don't let anyone else have them!
